Dojo Etiquette and Procedure
Bow
when entering or leaving training floor of Dojo.
Line
up for meditation
o Line up by rank or by seniority if of
equal rank.
o Wait for person on right (senior
rank) to kneel before you kneel.
o Men kneel with knees more than two
fist lengths apart.
o Women kneel with thighs together.
o Kneel down two fist-lengths from
neighbor.
o Meditate on command: Mokuso (don’t
speak – think).
o Stop meditation on command: Yame
(stop).
o Bow on command: Rei.
Kihon
(basic practice)
o On command yoi get ready in natural
stance (shizentai).
o On command kamaete step into form
announced by instructor.
o On command yame return to natural
stance and wait for command yasume before relaxing.
Kata
(when demonstrating)
o Rei (bow) to instructor or judge with
feet together.
o Announce the name of Kata.
o Step to natural stance and command
yoi (ready) silently to yourself.
o Command hajime (begin) silently to
yourself.
o Command yame (stop) silently to
yourself.
o Return to natural stance, bring feet
together and rei (bow).
Kumite
(sparring practice)
o All engagements begin and end with a
bow.
o Attacker should follow directions
exactly, making honest and strong attacks.
o Students should never attack or
retaliate in anger.
o Students should never disrespect
opponent or instructor.
